The TSPDT Guide Explained
Please note that the TSPDT Guide on each director's page (where each director’s work is grouped under five viewing-recommendation categories) reflects the opinions of TSPDT only. The TSPDT guides are – by nature – purely subjective, and should be treated as such.

If you are after a more consensus-based appraisal of each director’s work, you can view a listing of their most critically-acclaimed films by following the Acclaimed Films link near the bottom of each TSPDT Guide. For example, see Alfred Hitchcock's acclaimed films. Additionally, the symbols (provided within the TSPDT guides) that denote a film as a member of the 1,000 Greatest Films () and/or 21st Century’s Most Acclaimed Films () listings further assist to highlight a film’s critical standing. Additionally, films listed over the years by Jonathan Rosenbaum () and Martin Scorsese () are also tagged.

The TSPDT Guide does not offer (in most cases) a full filmography of each director’s work. It only includes the films that we have seen. Links to IMDB (for complete or more complete filmographies) are provided.

Viewing-Recommendation Categories-:
Highly Recommended
A perfect, or near-perfect film. More often than not, a masterpiece. A definite must-see.
Recommended
A very good film. Not a masterpiece, but a highly rewarding film experience. A definite must-see.
Worth a Look
Possibly flawed, but still a good film, and well worth your time. You really should see this (this category could probably be re-named to Definitely-Worth-a-Look).
Approach with Caution
A flawed film that still offers the viewer something. I wouldn’t completely dismiss this film as it may contain an inspired moment or two, or a great performance or two. You probably should still see this.
Not Recommended
A genuinely flawed film that offers little. I wouldn’t dissuade anyone from seeing this (or any film for that matter), but I – personally – wouldn’t recommend it. You will notice that their are very few films categorised within this category.
